‘We Must Strive for an America where Abortion Isn’t Just Illegal — It’s Unthinkable,’ March for Life Speaker Abby Johnson Tells My Faith Votes

“It is our duty to give a voice to those who have none.”

WASHINGTON — My Faith Votes will join tens of thousands of pro-life supporters Friday in Washington, D.C. for the 46th annual March for Life. Ahead of Friday’s events, My Faith Votes sat down for a conversation with Abby Johnson about her perspective on how the pro-life movement can make progress against the abortion epidemic. My Faith Votes has partnered with Johnson’s upcoming full-length film Unplanned, which hits theaters nationwide March 22, to provide ways audience members can instantly become involved in the pro-life cause.

Johnson worked for years as a Planned Parenthood clinic director but became a pro-life activist after witnessing gruesome abortion procedures that left her with no doubt “that there was humanity in the womb and that abortion was taking an individual human life.”

This year’s March for Life theme, “Unique from Day One” will highlight how a pro-life position is also a pro-science position. “As science becomes more advanced we know more about the unborn person in the womb,” says Johnson, “about what makes them unique and unrepeatable.”

According to Johnson, one in three women have been affected by abortion — which also means one in three men have been too. This is why Johnson’s ministry “And Then There Were None” advocates for the pro-life cause and serves those who’ve been affected by abortion either by experiencing it personally or by working at an abortion facility.

As to how pro-life advocates, including Christians, should engage with pro-abortion supporters Johnson encourages a spirit of love and tenderness. “The majority of people I know who support abortion do so because they themselves have had abortions,” Johnson observed. “We have to remember that someone who’s yelling in our face or giving us a piece of their mind on Facebook is someone who’s deeply wounded and broken. It’s not about winning an argument. It’s about reaching the heart of the person you’re speaking with and showing them love goes further than throwing facts at them.”

Johnson lobbies to reduce access to and funding for abortions but believes the pro-life movement should not only focus on legislative solutions. The goal “cannot be simply to make abortion illegal.” Instead, she suggests the goal must be “to make abortion unthinkable so that when a woman experiences an unplanned pregnancy, she never even thinks about darkening the door of a facility that will exploit her, manipulate her and take the life of her child.”

An estimated 25 million Christians who are registered to vote, fail to vote in presidential elections. My Faith Votes is on a mission to change this statistic by helping Christians act on their faith and vote in every election. When we pray unceasingly for our nation, think biblically about the issues, and vote consistently in every election the impact of Christians taking action from the local to the state and federal level will be unprecedented.
