You Said

This week's focus: Prayer

I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem;
They shall never hold their peace day or night.
You who make mention of the LORD, do not keep silent,
And give Him no rest till He establishes
And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. - Isaiah 62:6-7

What an incredible command God gives us regarding Himself. If you’re a parent, can you imagine telling your kids not to let you rest, day or night, until you fulfill a promise you made to them? If so, you would have constant reminders, “Mommy, you said!” or “Daddy, you said!” Children don’t take it personally when they don’t receive a “yes” the first time they ask for something. They have the patience and endurance it takes to keep asking, to keep reminding, and to keep knocking.

Prayer warriors—those who make mention of the LORD—have this same tenacity to give God “no rest.” They understand that He wants to include His children to bring His promises to pass. Philippians 2:13 says that it is God who works in us, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Striving in prayer is not a burden when we realize it is the Lord who empowers us. What an honor.

Another blessing of reminding the Lord of His promises is the peace we experience. We don’t have to wonder if the prayer will be answered but when. God is in complete control of the timing; our part is simply to do the reminding! Of course, our Heavenly Father has a perfect memory, but He understands that we don’t. We have the terrible habit of forgetting, and by reminding Him, we are reminding ourselves. We find comfort, strength, and courage by praying scripture back to Him. In this challenging world, His promises give us hope to cope.

God’s word is powerful and applies to every situation we face:

When we are afraid: “You said, fear not, for I am with you...” (Isaiah 41:10).

When we are lonely: “You said, never will I leave you, never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

When we are stressed and tired: “You said, come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

When we don’t know what to do: “You said, You will instruct us in the way we should go” (Psalm 32:8).

When our nation needs healing: “You said, if we will pray and seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways, then You will hear from heaven, and will forgive our sin and will heal our land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

When our hearts are broken: “You said, You are close to the brokenhearted and will save those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

When we need a miracle: “You said, what is impossible with man is possible with You” (Luke 18:27).

If you belong to the Lord, you are His child. He wants you to take everything to Him in prayer. What promise do you want to bring to His attention? Don’t hold your peace or keep silent about it, but speak to your Father and remind Him,

“Daddy, You said...”

Prayer Points:

Pray: Dear Lord, we praise we for the gift of Your word. Let us never take it for granted or fail to claim Your precious promises. Thank you for being a Good Father who wants to hear the prayers of Your children. May we pray unceasingly until we see You face to face.

Think: “A restless Savior calls upon his people to be restless, and to make the Lord himself restless – to give Him no rest till his chosen city is in full splendor, his chosen church complete and glorious.” - Charles Spurgeon
