Things We Can't Measure

This week's focus: The Greatness of God

There are things we can’t measure; the number of stars in the sky, the grains of sand by the sea, and the size of the universe. Our knowledge is limited, but this is not so with God. Not only does He know how many stars are in the universe, but He lovingly takes the time to name each one (see Psalm 147:4-5). He is a God concerned with details and intimately acquainted with all of our ways.

When we reflect on the greatness of God, it’s hard to understand how He can be concerned about even the most minor details in our lives. In Psalms 8, we find David struggling with the magnitude of God’s love toward us when he prayed; “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”

The Creator of the universe proved His love and care for us when He hung on a cross on our behalf. Romans 8:32 reminds us, “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with Him graciously give us all things?”

Our Heavenly Father is so grand that the highest Heavens can’t contain Him, yet He loves us so much that He numbers every hair on our heads. Yes, God is majestic and powerful—the God of our eternity, but He is also the majestic and powerful God of our moments.

Why do we find it easier to trust God with our eternity but struggle to trust Him with the temporal? What we worry about proves this to be true. Let’s change this by choosing to trust Him in all things, no matter how big or small.

When we are stuck in traffic and frustrated, we can look up and say, “Thank you that You are the God of my moments.”

When we fret over finances, we can confidently take our concerns to Him and say, “Thank you that You are the God of my details.”

When we are frantic with worry and don’t know what to do, we can declare, “Thank you that you are the God of all things, perfect in knowledge and able to handle anything that comes my way.”

When the Lord of all creation shows up in the details and answers even our smallest prayers, it teaches us how big and powerful He is. May we rejoice that the greatness of our God is limitless, and His love for His children has no end.

Thank you, Lord, that there are things we can’t measure.
