The Power of Asking

This week's focus: Boldness

James 4:2 tells us that “You do not have, because you do not ask.” After taking my little nephews into a store recently, I have empirical data that they agree with this verse! Children have an inherent boldness and tenacity in asking for what they want. Even if the answer is no, give them a few minutes, and they’ll be back at it. They have mastered the keep asking, seeking, and knocking that Jesus talks about in the Bible. My nephews didn’t get everything they wanted that day, but I can guarantee it wasn’t because they didn’t ask!

In the Bible, we read that God wants us to seek Him for our needs, bring our requests to Him, and ask Him for what we want. In Psalm 2:8, we find that God the Father said to His Son, “Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth as Your possession.” If the Son of God wasn’t exempt from asking before receiving, neither are we.

In a culture moving further away from God and His laws, we must be bold in asking, tenacious in our faith, and fearless in our actions. God’s children are called to be lights in a dark world, which means we must be active participants and not apathetic spectators. Thankfully, the first disciples didn’t stay hidden in the upper room; with the power of the Holy Spirit, they went out into the world and changed it for the better. Like them, we are ambassadors for Christ, in partnership with Him, to accomplish His will on earth.

One of the ways we can pierce the darkness is by making our requests known in the voting booth. If we want a nation that God blesses, we must pray for godly leaders who will seek justice and fight against laws that violate Biblical commands. Our country was founded on the idea that “we the people,” are responsible for selecting our leaders. Our votes choose, endorse, decide, defeat, or authorize candidates and laws, which is why it’s essential Christians should participate in the processes. We cannot complain about the darkness in the world if we refuse to do all that is in our power to usher in the light.

Like the example of my nephews, may we be bold and make our voices heard. We can’t always guarantee the outcome, but let it never be that we didn’t ask.

James 4:2

"You do not have, because you do not ask."

Prayer Points:

Pray: Father, We praise You for allowing us to come boldly and confidently to You in prayer. Thank you that if we ask for anything according to Your will, we will receive it. We desire to live for You and be Your ambassadors. Please increase our boldness and courage so we can take a stand for what is right. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.

Think: How many blessings are we forfeiting by not presenting our requests before God?

Act: Voter registration deadlines are approaching for many states. We're asking you to make sure you are registered to vote or to check your voter registration to be sure it's up to date. You can do that in My Voter Hub. It’s quick and it’s easy!

We want to see God honored in America, and we pray for an unprecedented spiritual awakening.
