Renown - Weekly Devotional

This week's focus: Renown

Renown is defined as:

  • a state of being widely acclaimed and highly honored
  • fame
  • the state or quality of being widely honored and acclaimed

God's name is eternal and will never be changed. His character is immutable; his fame and honor shall remain through all eternity.

Though silver and gold are useful to us when we rightly employ them, there is nothing about them that can entitle them to reverence, honor, and worship. As the psalm says, we must be careful not to make them our idols.

As the worship song “Your Great Renown” eloquently states,

We want to see the nations bow
We want to hear the rising sound
Of the worship that You deserve
We want this passion to abound
A burden for Your great Renown
For Yours is the greatest Name of all

Psalm 135:13-21 (NIV)

Your name, LORD, endures forever, your renown, LORD, through all generations. For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants. The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. All you Israelites, praise the LORD; house of Aaron, praise the LORD; house of Levi, praise the LORD; you who fear him, praise the LORD. Praise be to the LORD from Zion, to him who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise the LORD.

Prayer Points:

  • Father forgive us if we have idolized politics and politicians, for turning to fallible, temporary systems for security instead of finding life-giving, eternal answers in You. We need You, our nation needs You. We pray that as Christians, we prepare for a role much more vital and important than ever before in our nation. We are to be salt and light. Help us to be mindful of the right perspective, to put our trust in You and not in the temporary things of this world that can easily become our idols.
  • Heavenly Father, You are the Source of our confidence in all things. You have set a plan in place for this nation and You alone know its future. As we witness the many things that are happening in our nation right now, we ask for Your mercy upon our nation. Be the guide for Your people and keep hearts open to Your leading as decisions are made that will impact our lives and country. Imprint Your will upon us as we pray for our leaders, over the pandemic, about our economy, about divisions within our government, and more. Holy Spirit, intercede for us when we don’t have any more words. Thank you for hearing us and never forsaking us as we ask in Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen.

We want to see God honored in America, and we pray for an unprecedented spiritual awakening.
