First Things First

This week's focus: Resolve

As we enter a brand-new year, many people will make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, learn a new skill, pay off debt, begin a new hobby, etc. All these things are good, but what is even better is making resolutions that will last into eternity. By prioritizing our list and placing God first (studying His word and spending time with Him in prayer) we are more equipped to do everything else.

By resolving to stay close to our Creator, He takes us from faith to faith (Romans 1:17) and glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18). Additionally, with Him, we become greater and greater (2 Samuel 5:10), stronger and stronger (Job 17:9) and our path becomes brighter and brighter (Proverbs 4:18). In an uncertain and dark world, God’s children are light bearers who lead others to Jesus—the closer we remain to the Son, the brighter we will shine.

Unlike some goals that begin on January 1st and we abandon by March, time spent with the Lord increases our desire to know Him more. We want to stay the course, and in doing so, we become better people in His presence: stronger, braver, and wiser—all resolution-worthy attributes!

As we enter a brand-new year, let us place Jesus at the top of our list. With Him by our side, we will flourish and thrive—and as a bonus, we don’t have to be anxious about what the future holds because we personally know the One who holds the future.
