Dependence - Weekly Devotional

This week's focus: Dependence

Dependence is defined as:

  • reliance, trust
  • the quality or state of being influenced or determined by or subject to another

Father, as we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day this week, we are grateful for all You have blessed us with through the years. We rightly sing, “America, America, God shed His grace on thee.” Yet we see trouble in America today. We see the breakdown of the family, crippling addictions, division, and acts of violence. What we need is a recognition and acceptance of our deep spiritual dependence. Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Far from being self-reliant, help us to remember we are totally and eternally dependent on the One who died to set us free. May every day be our “dependence day.”

Psalm 62:5; Proverbs 3:5-6

"I depend on God alone; I put my hope in him."

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight."

Prayer Points:

In response to Benjamin Franklin’s call to seek God that was made on June 28, 1787, the Rev. William Rogers prayed before the service that was held at the Reformed Calvinist Church in Philadelphia on July 4th of that year. The text of the powerful prayer was printed in The Massachusetts Centinel. Read the prayer here.

We want to see God honored in America, and we pray for an unprecedented spiritual awakening.
