Religious Freedom and Its Power to Unite Christians

"It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand,” said John Adams, second President of the United States.

The basis of freedom was once commonly believed to stem from religion and morality; yet sadly, our nation has taken for granted the blessing of religious freedom, and we’ve often neglected to be a beacon to the world to defend and protect it. 

However, this could be changing. For the first time in history, a sitting U.S. President gave a speech at the United Nations General Assembly solely focused on religious freedom. President Trump called on the governments of the world to “honor the eternal right of every person to follow their conscience, live by their faith, and give glory to God” stating, “The United States has a vital role in this critical mission.” Trump said we are a nation “founded on the principle that our rights do not come from government; they come from God.”

According to President Trump, 80 percent of the world’s population lives in nations where religious freedom is threatened, restricted, or banned. On average, 11 Christians around the world are killed each day for following the teachings of Christ. President Trump called this a “wound on all humanity.”

Christians may not all agree on big issues such as taxes, gun control, climate change, and immigration but people of faith can be brought together to defend the most fundamental human right of religious freedom, one of our core pillars of belief at My Faith Votes. There are 90-million Christians in America, and we are on a mission to equip them to be advocates for religious freedom at the polls. We work to see Christians elect leaders and support policies that protect every American’s religious freedom and defend it across the world.
