A Mother Knows

“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3)

The American holiday we celebrate as Mother’s Day was created in 1908 by a woman named Anna Jarvis to recognize the sacrifices mothers make for their children. President Woodrow Wilson made it official in 1914 by signing a measure establishing the holiday on the second Sunday in May.

While it is good to set aside a day to honor our mothers, God calls us to honor them every day and promises us long lives if we do. So, let’s pause to honor all mothers and celebrate the experiences that make them unique, those things that, by God’s design, only a mother can know.

Only a mother knows what it’s like to be pregnant—to carry a growing human being inside her body, to feel it quicken and know a second heart beats alongside her own.

Only a mother can experience childbirth—to know the physical process of giving birth to a child. The intense pain. The super-human effort. The indescribable reward.

Only a mother can breastfeed — to feel the satisfaction of nourishing and sustaining a life with her own breastmilk.

A mother has maternal instincts—the special ability to nurture and protect her child with an uncanny sixth sense. Mothers can detect the subtle shift in the tone of their baby’s cry or a teenager’s mood. They can diagnose a fever with the touch of a forehead, long before a thermometer confirms it.

Only a mother knows the maternal bond—that deep emotional connection between a mother and her child is experienced by biological and adoptive mothers and is unlike any other.

A mother knows sacrifice—they sacrifice their bodies during pregnancy, endure sleep deprivation and forgo career advancement. And yet, they accept these sacrifices and many more, gladly exchanging them for the unparalleled joy that motherhood brings.

And a mother knows endless love — the boundless affection a mother feels for her child. It is unique and profound and provides a reminder of God’s love for us.

So, this Mother’s Day — and every day — honor your mother so that she receives the recognition she so richly deserved and that you may enjoy God’s blessings.
